Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Institute for Maritime Energy Systems in Kiel we are looking for a
Student Mathematics, Techno Mathematics, Computational Science, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or similar (f/m/x)
Numerical simulation with a potential flow solver
What to expect:
The DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems researches and develops innovative solutions for decarbonization as well as emission reduction in shipping and transfers them into practice by cooperation with industry. Pursuing this goal, the Department of Ship Performance analyzes ship hydrodynamics with numerical and experimental tools. Thereby, the role of novel energy systems and their impact on the performance of ships in natural sea states is of special interest.
We develop a novel boundary element method targeting to analyze the hydrodynamic behavior of ships in realistic sea states. For the continuing development of the solver, numerical simulations and the conduction of parameter studies are important, e.g. to investigate the impact of parameter combinations on the accuracy and performance of the method.
In this context, your tasks could include a subset of the following:
  • conduct numerical simulations with the boundary element method,
  • run parameter studies from which favorable parameter combinations can be derived,
  • the implementation of an adaptive parameter choice based on the results of parameter studies,
  • the set-up of a data source for verification and validation cases,
  • and more possible tasks in the context of numerical mathematics and hydrodynamics.
You can expect:
  • an inspiring research topic and working in the DLR research environment,
  • work on numerical modeling and analysis,
  • potential topics for a master thesis or the possibility of extending the contract.
What we expect from you:
If you are affiliated in the period of the contract (start date + 6 months) with a master's program in:
  • Mathematics or Techno Mathematics,
  • Computational Science,
  • Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering,
  • Theoretical Mechanical Engineering,
  • or related fields.
As the topics are related to
  • numerical methods,
  • hydrodynamics and
  • programming (Matlab and C++),
an interest and further knowledge in this field would be even more favorable for the above-mentioned tasks.
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
