Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Institute of Communications and Navigation in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich we are looking for a
Student Engineering, Physics, Information Technology or similar (f/m/x)
Validation of attitude control and estimation algorithms for high-performance pointing mechanisms
What to expect:
Over the past few years, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) has developed several small laser communication terminals (LCTs). These range from the smallest commercially available CubeLCT, which has a size of 0.3U in the CubeSat standard, to 1U+ sized terminals with hemispherical pointing capabilities.
Trending developments highlight the use of LCTs in satellite or high-altitude platform constellations. Therefore, algorithms capable of handling multiple pointing mechanisms simultaneously are required to enable high-performance interconnections.

The task of this student position is to support with the design and execution of experiments. These will serve to characterize the involved pointing mechanisms and validate the developed algorithms.

Individual tasks include:
  • measurement of vibrations during operation
  • calibration and characterization of onboard attitude sensors
  • validation of the functionality of mechanisms before and after qualification tests
  • analyzing the performance of control and estimation algorithms

Work outline:
  • 20% Conceptualize the experiments
  • 70% Executing tests and analyze the performance
  • 10% Documentation of results

Students may have the option of writing a Bachelor's or Master's thesis.
What we expect from you:
  • experience with hardware projects at university or as part of a hobby is desirable
  • hands-on experience in embedded C/C++ programming for microcontrollers (code composer studio, microchip studio or similar)
  • interest in optical communications
  • ability to work independently
  • very good technical english or german required
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
