Doctoral Fellowship
Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
Our Institute of Microwaves and Radar in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich offers a
DLR-DAAD Doctoral Fellowship
Nr. 665: Development of Adaptive and Cognitive Radar Methods and Demonstration With a Distributed UAV-SAR System
What to expect:
The Microwaves and Radar Institute of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) develops innovative sensors, algorithms and applications for ground, airborne and satellite-based microwave remote sensing. With his leading expertise and system knowledge in the field of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), the focus of his research is on the conception and development of new SAR techniques and systems as well as the associated sensor-specific applications.

The Institute currently builds up a distributed UAV-SAR system consisting of several multicopter platforms, each carrying a fully digital multichannel SAR sensor. In the frame of the doctoral thesis novel adaptive and cognitive radar methods and algorithms with real-time capability shall be developed, investigated, implemented and demonstrated for the very first time with the distributed UAV-SAR system. Thus, the candidate not only will carry out theoretical research work but will also program or modify parts of the software of the SAR sensors, which are based on AMD Zync UltraScale+ RFSoC FPGAs, and plan and conduct UAV-SAR flight
campaigns.

The candidate will also be encouraged to present her/his work at international conferences and to enrol on DLR's graduate program, a high-quality qualification initiative that accompanies the doctoral phase.
What we expect from you:
  • University diploma or master in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science or comparable, fundamental knowledge
    of radar signal processing
  • fundamental knowledge in machine learning
  • good programming skills in Python 3.x, fundamental knowledge about FPGAs
  • Solid foundations and experience in image
  • signal and radar signal processing (in particular SAR processing)
  • spectral estimation
  • probability and statistics, optimization techniques, and machine learning
  • sound programming skills in Python 3.x, sound knowledge and experience in FPGA and RFSoC programming, experience with ArduPilot and Pixhawk flight controllers, the MAVLink protocol and the operation of drones
  • open communication and team spirit are furthermore expected
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
