Course paper/final thesis
Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Institute of Flight Systems in Braunschweig we are looking for a
Student of aerospace/electrical engineering, computer science, or similar (f/m/x)
Pose Estimation of Non-cooperative Aircraft with Machine Learning
What to expect:
The Institute of Flight Systems is developing new concepts and technologies for autonomous unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The ability to detect and track other aircraft is fundamental for autonomous UAS missions. Thus, perception tasks through the use of Machine Learning (ML) are being investigated.

Autonomous UAS needs to be aware of surrounding vehicles, which includes the position and orientation (pose) of aicraft nearby. The task becomes more challenging when considering the small appearance of the object of interest, and their complex features. Furthermore, these algorithms must be reliable, robust and safe.

Your task is to investigate and implement possible solutions for one of the following problems:
  • develop new ML-models for pose estimation
  • evaluate the robustness and reliability of ML-models
What we expect from you:
  • currently enrolled in university scientific studies in the field of aerospace/electrical engineering, computer science, or other comparable field of study
  • good communication and cooperation skills
  • proficiency in English language (spoken and written)
  • enthusiasm, motivation and creativity
  • good expertise in object oriented software development with C++ and Python
  • previous contact with machine leaning frameworks (e.g. Pytorch, Tensorflow, Caffe, …)
  • experience with image processing methods (e.g. OpenCV)
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
